MANGALORE : A place called Devaragudde near Polali, the famous pilgrim shrine of the district where is located the Sri Rajarajeshwari Temple, is today a centre of attraction particularly after the tracing of an ancient Shivalinga and an inscription in the area two months ago.
Even the belief of the locals that the newly traced Shivalinga was the one which grows in size with the passing of each year, has further added to the attraction with large number of devotees thronging the area in the recent past. Even a Swamiji is presently camping in the area and committees are also being formed to develop this temple.
History of the Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple says that there were ten temples of Lord Eshwar in and around the temple. Already, there is the Akhileshwara Temple and now the tracing of the Devaragudde temple, has been the latest addition.
Devaragudde is located 1.5 km away from Polali and here are seen remains of what might have been a lake in the past. Moreover, wherever dug in ths area, some materials, be it ancient bricks or portions of broken stone idols are found and this place has now turned out to be an ideal spot for historians and archaeologists.
The ancient Shivalinga that was traced recently, is of white stone and unique as is the idol of the Goddess at the Polali Kshetra which is clay made.
The Devaragudda Temple, it is believed has a history of over 400 years and some even contend that it was destroyed during the attack of the Moghuls.
Presently, it is also believed that an Eshwara Temple too might have existed in the past at Ammunje area nera Polali.
There are chances of Polali which is already a famous pilgrim spot, developing into a major one, if all the ten temples said to have existed here, surrounding the main temple, are traced.
