Rs 1.5 cr spent on city jail upgradation goes down drain
By CT reporter
MANGALORE : A huge multi-storied building that has come up near the MG Road in the city has virtually proved waste the nearly Rs 1.5 crore utilised towards the upgradation of the city sub-jail.
As per the existing rules, there is no scope to raise any mutli-storied construction within 200 meter radius of jails, tourist bungalows, courts and other places of state prominence with also the height of the nearby constructions not to exceed the height of the government structures. But, in case of Mangalore, it is something contradicting and a multi-storied construction has also been raised near the jail.
Though there had been a proposal to shift the jail premises, no step has been taken towards that direction. so far.
The Central Jail project
With an intention of upgrading the city sub-jail ,a scheme was prepared and the state government had approved a Rs 15 crore project of upgrading the sub-jail into a central jail.
Even a sum of Rs 1.5 crore has been spent on the project so far. In the meantime, the city corporation received an application to permit a multi-storied construction nearby. The builder lobby had in fact pressurised the corporation to grant licence and in the meantime, the jail upgradation project was shelved.
However, the distrct minister who had once said that the cental jail would be constructed at Konaje, later on said it would be raised at Vamanjoor. But, nothing materialised.
Now, the mult-storied building has come up within the 50 meter radius of the subjail. However, what is surprising is the interest taken by our authorities in shelving a Rs 15 crore government project merely to give room for some private party.
On the other hand, it is also being said that this building that has come up in the already congested MG Road was sure to add to the traffic woes of this road.
