Udupi’s live bands reopen

From our Udupi office
UDUPI : The two live bands in Udupi which had shut their doors ever since Hitendra Prasad, the dreaded criminal was murdered outside the Talloor’s live band at Manipal in the month of August, have reopened a few days ago and have once again begun their Nanganaach shows.
Though these live bands had then suspended operations following a directive from the then SP Subrahmanyeshwar Rao, now with Rao away in US for training and with no objections from ASP Satish Kumar and in-charge SP Dayanand, the live bands have dared to reopen.
Though no other live band is operating in any other part of the state, it is surprising that two live bands namely Josh and Nasha are operating, one near the bus stand and another on the highway.
According to one information available, the veiled patronage extended to the live bands by ASP Satish Kumar, had played a role in the owners mustering courage to reopen the live bands.
If reports are to be believed, the live band owners have completely taken into confidence Satish Kumar, the liquor and fun loving ASP.
But, it is not known if the live bands were restarted with oral permission from Subrahmanyeshwara Rao or otherwise and this may be clear once the SP returns hometown. However, a live band owner Deepak says as per the High Court ruling, police permission was not needed to open live bands in areas coming outside the purview of corporations.
But, HC order also says that the live bands cannot operate beyond 11 in the night and that liquor could not be supplied to the live band halls. Are these two rules strictly adhered to by the live band owners ?. After all which live band shuts its doors at sharp 11 pm ?
Rs 75000 mamool to cops from live bands!
In the meantime, information available so far has revealed that the live band owners who are functioning illegally are passing on a mamool of nearly Rs 75000 to the police department every month.
It has even been gathered that of the total amount passed on from each live band, DySP receives Rs 10,000, DySP squad Rs 5000, crime inspector and town inspector Rs 10,000 each, ASIs Rs 1000 each, Rs 500 to each police officer and Rs 1000 to excise drivers. In one more information, it is said the mamool to the department has increased particularly after the murder of Hitendra Prasad, with the amount being Rs 60,000 earlier. Arrangements, it is learnt, have been made from the DySP office to collect the amount.
When Hitendra was alive, he used to keep Rs 25000 for himself and pass on the remaining Rs 35000 to the police personnel. Sources indicated that Hitendra even used to assure live band owners that he would see to it that the police did not harass them.
Now, after Hitendra’s death it is the cops who are reigning supreme and therefore the hike in the mamool.
Sources close to some live bands have also revealed that each live band earns nearly Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 per day.
