Poojari for mayoral post to Billawa or Christian eve
By CT reporter
MANGALORE : Rajya Sabha Member and former KPCC president B Janardhan Poojari is in favour of granting the mayoral post this time to either a Billawa or Christian candidate who has so far not enjoyed any post or position in the party.
This was made clear by Poojari at a corporators’ meeting convened by him in the city recently to discuss the mayoral election issue.
As the tenure of the next mayor would also be less, Poojari is said to have appealed to all corporators to cooperate with him.
This latest indication from Poojari has proved a setback to Surekha Rai, corporator of Kannur ward and a loyalist of DCC in-charge Ramanatha Rai, who was one of the aspirants for the top post.
On the other hand, the chances of Sesamma of Alape ward and Jecintha Vijay Alfred of Milagres award seem to be bright now.
In the meantime, Vijaya Arun, who had moved the court on the reservation issue and has now been successful in getting a favourable verdict, stands to lose this time as chances of her securing the post are remote as she has already occupied standing committee presidentship twice. Already, leaders are learnt to have made it clear to Vijaya Arun that it be better for her to forget the fruits of her labour. Moreover, many leaders in the Congress also say that Vijaya Arun’s moving the court in a hurry resulted in wastage of valuable time, as leaders were planning to have a lady itself as the next mayor.
So far during the present Congress tenure in MCC, no Christian or Billawa candidate had been accorded the post of mayor.
The Poojari convened meeting was attended by 75 per cent of the party corporators while the rest are identified with the other factions. The government has already issued a notification for the mayoral polls which are likely to be held by the month end.
