From our Udupi office
UDUPI : The Udupi District and Sessions Court has recently acquitted all the accused in the Udupi jeweller Akevoor Prabhaker Acharya murder case that took place five years ago.
Those acquitted are Sunil alias Dinesh alias Jayananda Ganiga of Manjeshwar, Venkat alias Venkatesh alias Chota alias Vikki of Pune and Sarf alias Sarfaraz of Udupi Kodavoor.
There are three more accused in this case. While two of them Yogish Nayak and Krishna K Kunder had died, another accused Vishwanath Shetty of Karkala Bailoor is absconding.
Acharya was murdered at the Mangala Jewellers near the Udupi city bus stand on May 17, 2001 with the then circle inspector GA Jagadish arresting the accused. The court has now released them on the grounds that the prosecution has failed to prove the charges against them.
It may be recalled here that the murder had sent shock waves all over the town with even a protest held demanding the arrest of the killers.
