Blast in illegal fire works unit in Puttur kills 5
PUTTUR : Tragedy struck Puttur taluk, just as Deepavali was a few days away, when an explosion that rocked an illegal fire works unit at a place called Buderiya in Kadaba of the taluk killed five people including an infant on the spot. The explosion took place when the fire works were being loaded into an autorickshaw to be transported to some other place.
The killed are Fakira Saheba (55), his son Rafique (22), a neighbour Vijaya Gowda (22)., Dikshit also a neighbour and the autorickshaw driver who is 19 years old. One person named Nanayya Gowda sustained injuries in his leg.
Manufacturing fire works had been the hereditary profession of this family with Fakira Saheb’s father too engaged in the same profession.
Locals say the family used to manufacture fire works, crude bomb, and stone breaking explosives illegally.
The mishap occurred when the manufacturers decided to transport the manufactured produts in an autorickshaw when the police attention was diverted towards the APMC elections being held in the taluk that day.
The magnitude of the explosion was so high that the body of the autorickshaw driver was ripped apart and scattered even upto a distance of 10 meters. The impact of the explosion also left the autorickshaw in pieces.
During the year 2004, one of the persons killed, Rafique, had sustained head injuries. Still the family pursued the same dangerous profession that proved fatal even to two neighbours including a kid.
In the meantime, locals say the police despite being very well aware about the unlicenced manufacture of the fire works and explosives, had however failed to take any action . A thorough probe need to be undertaken into this case.
Case turns mystersious
However, this case is turning more mysterious for the cops who are saying that no licence has been given to anyone in the district to manufacture fire works with licences granted only for sale of the same.
The magnitude of this explosion the sound of which was heard even by people much away from the site of the blast, has also given room for doubts for there are many who argue that this might not be an explosion that caused out of fire works and surely might have been owing to a powerful explosive device.
The district minister Ngaraj Shetty also visited the spot of the mishap and the local legislator Shakuntala Shetty has also assured to raise this case in the assembly.
In the meantime, it has been gathered that no compensation can be granted to any relative of the killed as the explosion had taken place in an illegal unit.
