Houseflies are here to trouble M’loreans
By CT reporter
MANGALORE : Houseflies have once again swarmed the city much to the dismay of Mangaloreans. As if to top the problem, houseflies are also served free of cost along with the food in some hotels.
The main reason for the present problem is the drying of fish in the coastal line areas like Bengre and Kudru. It is a tragedy that our city corporation as well as the health department have failed to find some way to avert this problem which recurs every year.
Though citizens as well as other organisations had launched a protest against this menace last year, it seems, this protest has failed to have any bearing on our authorities with even the district administration now blamed for apathy.
Is fish drying
the sole cause?
While those in the fishing industry say drying of fish in the open was not solely responsible for the house-fly menace, health department is of the contention that there cannot be any solution in the offing for the problem unless and until people in the fishing industry adopt scientific fish drying methods.
Whatever it is, the fact remains that the area where the fish is being dried is highly unhygienic. The half dried fish which are damp further add to the fly menace which in turn engulf the whole of the city. Moreover, these flies breed and multiply in the garbage bin areas and today are posing serious health hazards to Mangaloreans. Today, the situation is such that these flies have virtually swarmed some of our hotels and bakeries where flies devour the sweets and other eatables .
The need of the hour is for the health department to issue stern instructions to maintain cleanliness and also to check the house-fly menace. In the meantime Manjayya, the city corporation health officer said the corporation has already instructed the departments concerned to spray anti-insect repellants to keep the menace under check.
He argued that unscientific methods of drying of fish was mainly rasponsible for the problem. He even said the people engaged in the profession have not extended their cooperation in implementing the recommendations made by the DC last year to end the problem.
